The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has developed an industry guidance on the importation of non-compliant meat products falling under section 19 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).
Updated guidance
The industry guidance on importing meat products falling under section 19 of the SFCR replaces the Meat products imported under waiver policy.
Importers can import meat products from Unites States (US) which do not meet Canadian labelling and/or compositional requirements to be manufactured, processed, treated, preserved, graded, packaged or labelled in Canada and exported to any country of destination by following established export procedures.
Previous authorizations
Please note that previous authorizations granted under the Meat Inspection Regulations (MIR) to import meat products under a waiver remain active until May 1st, 2025. After that date, imports of meat products under waiver previously authorized will be rejected.
The importers must follow the new industry guidance in order to import noncompliant meat products under the section 19 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).
