General
- Origin & Breeding: bred from (MS321-38 x MS709) at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan (USA) in 1970. Released jointly by Michigan State University, Agriculture Canada, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and University of Guelph in 1987.

Botanical Features
- Plants: medium size, semi-spreading; stems strongly pigmented; small straight wings.
- Leaves: dark yellowish green, closed, glabrous, deep veins; midribs and petioles have purplish brown pigment.
Terminal leaflets: elliptical; tip acuminate.
Primary leaflets: four pairs; slightly narrower than terminal leaflet. - Flowers: abundant, small corolla, white cream with a gold star, slightly ruffled; moderate berry production.
- Tubers: oval; smooth, thin, creamy yellow skin; numerous shallow eyes; pale yellow flesh.
- Sprouts: ovoid, dark purple; apex very pubescent.
Agricultural Features
Medium yielding variety; resistant to hollow hart; good storability; medium dormancy period; medium to high specific gravity.
Good tolerance to Metribuzin herbicide when used at label rates. During trials, Saginaw Gold has consistently produce very good colour potato chips and french fries after 3-5 months storage at 10-11 °C.
- Utilization: excellent for chipping, very good for french frying, boiling and baking; no discoloration after cooking.
- Chief Markets: chipping and table; good potential for seed exportation.
Reaction to Diseases
Resistant: silver scurf.
Good resistance: PVY, PVX, leafroll.
Susceptible: common scab.
