Notice to industry: Request for inspection services on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: September 30

The purpose of this notice is to inform the industry of a change that will apply to inspection services provided on September 30.

The Government of Canada recently passed legislation marking September 30 a federal statutory holiday named the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. As called for by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Indigenous leaders, this day is an important step in the reconciliation process. It provides an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honor their survivors, their families and communities.

Beginning this September 30, 2021, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will become a designated paid holiday for federally regulated workers in the public and private sector and will not be considered regular working hours for the purpose of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Fees Notice.

Accordingly, licence holders who will be slaughtering food animals or manufacturing, processing, treating, preserving, grading, packaging or labelling meat products on that day will need to follow the established method of requesting CFIA inspection services and pay the applicable fees such as overtime.

Please note that overtime fees may also apply for inspection services in food commodities other than meat products, as well as other inspection services under CFIA responsibility including plant and animal health sectors.

For more information, please contact your local CFIA inspection staff.
