Potato wart is extremely persistent. When present, it may reduce the harvest and quality of potato crops. Effective biosecurity programs are essential to help contain, control and prevent its spread. Careful consideration of which potato varieties to plant is also very important. Currently, potato wart is only found in two places in Canada: Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island (PEI).
Learn about potato varieties that are resistant and susceptible to potato wart in PEI and what you can do when selecting what potatoes to grow.
Resistant varieties
Resistant potato varieties help suppress potato wart and reduce the risk of spread. Depending on the pathotype of potato wart present in an area, different varieties may be more resistant than others.
The varieties currently considered resistant to the potato wart pathotypes present in PEI are:
- Althea
- Frontier Russet
- Goldrush
- HiLite Russet
- Prospect
New varieties will be added to the list once they are confirmed to be resistant.
Other potato varieties continue to be assessed for resistance. To determine if a specific variety has been assessed for resistance to the potato wart pathotypes present in PEI, contact cfia.potatosection-sectiondespommesdeterre.acia@inspection.gc.ca.
Susceptible varieties
Susceptible potato varieties are proactively identified for use in the Potato Wart Domestic Long Term Management Plan. If you choose to plant susceptible potato varieties in eligible restricted fields, you should:
- notify the CFIA to support the scheduling of post-harvest surveillance activities
- implement on-farm surveillance activities to monitor the harvested crop for symptoms
- ensure your staff is trained to identify potato wart symptoms, handle symptomatic tubers and report suspected sightings
To add a potato variety to the list of susceptible varieties, contact the CFIA at cfia.potatosection-sectiondespommesdeterre.acia@inspection.gc.ca and provide:
- the variety name
- the applicant/holder if the variety is protected under Plant Breeders' Rights
- the published sources indicating its susceptibility to specific pathotypes of potato wart
- additional information indicating potato wart pathotype susceptibility
