Stop the spread this winter

Favourite seasons may come and go, but addressing the spread of invasive pests remains a top priority year-round.

By recognizing and reporting invasive pests, you protect the health of our plants and trees so you can enjoy your favourite activities—whether camping, hiking, travelling for the holidays, or spending time outdoors—for many years to come.

Invasive species pose a significant threat to our biodiversity and ecosystems, and human activities can worsen their spread throughout the year. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is here to help you with some tips and tricks to follow no matter what season it is:

This winter

Are you visiting cottages or doing some winter camping or outdoor activities while keeping warm with a campfire or wood-burning fireplace? – Be sure to buy local wood and burn local wood. Don't move firewood or other wood materials as they may have pesky pests hiding that can hitch a ride with you to a new location.

Travelling for the holidays or doing a cross-border shopping trip for the best deals? Learn what you can and cannot bring back to Canada before leaving to prevent any issues at the border – and stop the spread! Wooden souvenirs and plant items from trips abroad may have hitchhikers looking for a ride to new areas. Check out the travel guide to learn more.

Already dreaming of next year's garden? If you're thinking of plants you want for when the weather warms up, be mindful of where you buy your supplies. Seeds purchased online could be species of plants that are invasive to Canada.

What to do if you find something

  • Familiarize yourself with invasive pests
  • Take a picture if you spot something you don't recognize and report it to the CFIA
  • Scrape off egg masses or manually remove larvae or adults by soaking in soapy water or alcohol
  • Stay until the pests have been removed and destroyed

It is up to all of us to stop the spread; we hope you share these tips and tricks and are well-equipped to be a plant health hero!
