Notice to Industry : New zoosanitary statements for eggs and processed egg products

2024-10-25

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is modernizing and simplifying import requirements for raw and processed egg products. This is advance notice of changes to import requirements that will be published on December 19, 2024.

These changes do not apply to negotiated certificates for processed eggs for human consumption and further processing, from EU member states, Ukraine, or the United States. They do apply to all other countries evaluated for the export of animal products and by-products to Canada.

The new zoosanitary statements are as follows:

I, the undersigned official veterinarian, hereby certify that:

  1. The egg products described in this veterinary certificate originate from a country, a region or a zone recognized by Canada as free of Highly Pathogenic avian Influenza and virulent Newcastle Disease.

OR

  1. The egg products have been processed in accordance with WOAH Terrestrial Code Articles 10.4.23 and 10.9.20 to inactivate Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and virulent Newcastle Disease.
  2. The egg products have not been in contact with any animal or animal product or animal by-product of a lesser zoosanitary status.
  3. Once processing is finished, the egg products are packaged in new, tightly sealed waterproof/leak-proof containers, or re-useable cleaned and disinfected containers that are closed immediately after filling and that prevent cross contamination with any unfinished product.

We hope this information is helpful to you and will help you to prepare for these upcoming changes. There will be a 6-month transition period where either the new or the old statements will be accepted. Please ensure that you work with your importation team to be aware of this deadline and the new requirements.

If you have any questions about these changes, please contact the Animal Products and By-Products Import inbox at APABPImport@inspection.gc.ca. For routine inquiries, your local CFIA office continues to be your first point of contact.
