Due to outbreaks of LSD in Europe, we are implementing import restrictions on the following countries until further notice.

Live animals and germplasm
- The importation of live cattle or water buffalo from infected countries is prohibited
 - Semen and embryos of cattle or water buffalo collected more than 60 days prior to the outbreak may be eligible for importation, following a case-by-case evaluation

Animal products and by-products
- Animal products and by-products are restricted as of the effective date for animal products and by-products in table 1, which is 28 days prior to the date of detection
 - Dairy products made from pasteurized milk must be accompanied by a zoosanitary certificate stating they have been processed with 1 of the following treatments:

- Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) pasteurization: means a sterilization process applying a minimum temperature of 140°C for at least 3 seconds
 - High Temperature Short Time (HTST) pasteurization: means a process applying a minimum temperature of 72°C for at least 15 seconds
 - batch pasteurization at 63 °C for 30 minutes

 - Cheese made from pasteurized milk does not require a zoosanitary certificate
 - Cheese made from unpasteurized milk must be accompanied by a commercial document such as an invoice or packing slip, showing that the cheese was produced or exported before the effective date
 - Hides and skins must be accompanied by a zoosanitary certificate stating that they meet 1 of the following conditions:

- raw, green hides and skins, fresh or frozen, must have been collected prior to the effective date
 - treated hides and skins must have been treated with a method considered by WOAH to be effective against LSD:

- drying – treated at 20°C or higher for at least 42 days
 - salting – treated with salt containing 2% sodium chloride for at least 7 days
 - liming – treated to a pH of 11.5 or greater for at least 48 hours
 - pickling – treated to a pH of 3.0 or lower for at least 48 hours
 - tanning – treated with alkaline chromium (III) sulfate, vegetable tanning agents or synthetic tanning agents to irreversibly turn the hides and skins into leather

 -

hides and skins not meeting these requirements may be disinfected in Canada, after a CFIA inspector verifies the shipment is acceptably clean and free of:
- blood
 - feces
 - ectoparasites
 - soil
 - plant material (for example straw or hay or seeds)

The inspector must also confirm that the shipment is in a leak-proof container and seals and licenses it to a facility approved by the CFIA for the disinfection of imported animal products and by-products.
The importer must have arranged the inspection with their local CFIA district office and the disinfection with the disinfection facility, before the shipment arrives in Canada.
Further information on documentation requirements is provided in the Automated Import Reference System (AIRS).
