Lumpy skin disease - Countries that Canada recognizes as being free from the disease

Countries officially recognized by Canada as free of lumpy skin disease (LSD) listed in the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH; founded as Office International des Épizooties (OIE)) Terrestrial Animal Code.

Imports of live animals, germplasm, unpasteurized milk products and cheese made from unpasteurized milk, and untreated green raw hides from bovines and water buffalo originating from countries and/or zones not recognized as free are prohibited.

Import requirements for milk products, cheese, and hides and skins from Italy, France, and Switzerland due to current outbreaks

  • Milk and milk products (not including cheese) made from pasteurized milk must be accompanied by a zoosanitary certificate stating they have been treated with one of the following:
    • Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) pasteurization: means a sterilization process applying a minimum temperature of 140ºC for at least three seconds
    • High Temperature Short Time (HTST) pasteurization: means a process applying a minimum temperature of 72ºC for at least fifteen seconds
    • Batch pasteurization at 63ºC for 30 minutes
  • Cheese made from pasteurized milk does not require a zoosanitary certificate.
  • Cheese made from unpasteurized milk must be accompanied by a commercial document such as an invoice or packing slip showing that the cheese was produced or exported before the date above for the country of origin.
  • Hides and skins must be accompanied by a zoosanitary certificate stating that they meet one of the following:
    • Raw hides and skins must have been collected before the date above for the country of origin
    • Salted, hard-dried, pickled, or limed hides and skins must have been treated with a method effective against LSD
    • Hides and skins not meeting these requirements may be licensed for disinfection in Canada at the discretion of a CFIA inspector
