Annex 9: Incoming horse protocol and checklist

Incoming horse protocol standard operating procedure and checklist

Ensure your farm or facility has sufficient space to accommodate additional horses

Establish separation area for incoming horses that prevents direct nose-to-nose contact between horses.

  • Minimum of 25 m from other horses in a different barn; or
  • Temporary stall in a different building or next to the resident barn; or
  • Spare stall within the resident barn keeping the adjacent stalls empty.
Dedicate equipment for use with separated horses; or
Clean and disinfect equipment before and after use with separated horses.
Restrict access to separated horses and post biosecurity signage.

If purchasing horses:

  • Review health status of seller's herd and disease history of the facility; and
  • Purchase from as few sources as possible.
Ensure horses are identifiable – Record distinct markings, tattoos, brand, or microchip.
Request proof of veterinary clinical physical exam with negative findings for infectious diseases within previous 7 (space) days.
Request and review vaccination and deworming history.

Obtain proof of EIA test with negative results within past (space) months.

Conduct fecal egg count and deworm horses as appropriate.
Request and review medical records.

Separate incoming horses for:

  • 5-7 days (known high health status - Documentation, no recent contact with sick horses)
  • 14 days (from herd with similar health status)
  • 28 days (unknown health status)
Monitor the health of new horses daily, including rectal temperature and record results in a medical record.
If signs of sickness are observed in new horses, ensure clothing and footwear is changed and hands are washed after contact with horse. Conduct a horse health check and contact your veterinarian to establish a diagnosis.
