First-time applicants

Applicants applying through My CFIA

Before you apply online through My CFIA:

  • companies and their representatives will need to enroll in My CFIA
  • once the CFIA validates the company profile, the Profile Authority can assign roles and authorities to individual Contact Profiles in My CFIA

Determining your livestock feed evaluation category

You can determine your livestock feed evaluation category (category 1, 2, or 3) and applicable fee amounts by completing the online application in My CFIA or sections 5 and 6 of form CFIA/ACIA 5933 – Application for Feed Approval or Registration under the Feeds Act and Feeds Regulations.

Get your information ready

To submit an application for livestock feed approval or registration you'll need:

  • 1 complete application for any feed registration, feed ingredient approval, registration renewal, or amendment to a registration
  • a cover letter (required for submissions sent by mail)
  • 3 copies of your proposed product label for submissions sent by mail or an attached copy if using My CFIA
    • you can find guidance about the labelling of livestock feeds in Chapter 4 of the RG-1 document
  • the application fees corresponding to the livestock feed evaluation category
    • for applicants using My CFIA, fee amounts are auto-selected based on your answers in the application
    • for applicants submitting by mail, fee amounts are listed in the fee table above section 13 of the application form or in Part 4 of the CFIA Fees Notice.
  • supporting data as outlined in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 of the RG-1 document:
    • data requirements will vary depending on your livestock feed type
    • for applicants using My CFIA, you can upload copies of your supporting documentation into My CFIA

Additional information

If your livestock feed is a private label of an active registration, your application package will require other information.

Pre-submission consultation

A pre-submission consultation is a voluntary process that occurs between applicants and the CFIA.

The purpose of a pre-submission consultation is to discuss potential questions related to the assessment criteria of a specific livestock feed ingredient or product before an applicant submits their official pre-market submission for assessment.

Before requesting a pre-submission consultation, applicants must:

If an applicant needs more clarification after reviewing the guidance and asking for information by email, the applicant may request a pre-submission meeting with the CFIA by submitting form CFIA/ACIA 5917 – Application for data review under the Feeds Act and Feeds Regulations.
