The Feeds Regulations, 2024 were published on July 3, 2024, and have replaced the Feeds Regulations, 1983. We are working to update this page and the remaining website to reflect the Feeds Regulations, 2024. As new updates and guidance continue to be released, please refer to the Feed regulatory modernization page for more information.
Livestock feed approval or registration
If a pre-market evaluation is required under the Feeds Regulations, regulated parties will need to apply for the approval or registration of their livestock feed. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will then evaluate the livestock feed to make sure the feed is:
- safe for animals, humans and the environment
- effective for its intended purpose
- labelled properly
The CFIA conducts efficacy, livestock, human and environmental safety reviews and aims to respond to the applicant within 90 days (service standard to be reviewed). The CFIA informs applicants via email on the relative position of their submission in the file queue once the submission is accepted for evaluation.
Following the evaluation, if the CFIA determines that the feed meets all of the regulatory requirements, the CFIA will inform the applicant that their feed is approved or registered. Once a livestock feed is approved or registered, an applicant may now manufacture, sell and/or import the feed into Canada.
For more information about the evaluation process for livestock feeds requiring approval or registration, refer to the introduction of the RG-1 guidance document, Feed registration procedures and labelling standards.
