General

Botanical Features

• Plants: medium to tall, spreading; thick stems, prominently angled; internodes reddish purple; nodes slightly swollen, purplish green; wings distinctly wavy and purplish; stipules medium large, green, glabrous.
• Leaves: medium green, semi-closed; midribs green and pubescent; petioles slightly pigmented.
  Terminal leaflets: ovate; tip cuspidate; base cordate.
  Primary leaflets: four pairs; ovate, tip cuspidate; base cordate and asymmetrical; very wavy margins.
  Secondary and tertiary leaflets: moderately numerous.
• Flowers: medium size, light lilac corolla with white tips; deep orange-yellow anthers; calix lobes with long tips; peduncles moderately long and very pubescent; long pedicels, pubescent, pale green.
• Tubers: oblong, slightly flattened; slightly russetted, creamy white skin with purple shadings, predominant purpling around seed end; medium-deep eyes, numerous, with occasional light purple shading; eyebrows purple tinged, moderately prominent, almost straight; light cream flesh, tinged purple particularly at seed end.
• Sprouts: spherical, deep purple, base moderately pubescent; apex strongly pubescent.

Agricultural Features

Medium yielding variety; good storability; high specific gravity.

This variety has been grown in Prince Edward Island since early times and, in 1916, represented about 70% of all the potatoes grown on the island. It was first introduced to offset the losses from late blight. With the introduction of white varieties, the advance of late blight control techniques and the increased market demands for white varieties, the growing of this potato fell off.

• Utilization: very good for baking and boiling.
• Chief Market: home gardens.

Reaction to Diseases

Good resistance: late blight, most viruses.
Moderately resistant: common scab.
