Declaration for travellers leaving Newfoundland and Labrador

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is informing ferry travellers leaving Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) of soil requirements under the federal Plant Protection Act.

Newfoundland and Labrador soil restrictions

Soil in NL contains potato wart and potato cyst nematodes. These pests can be carried in soil and articles carrying soil. If spread, these pests can negatively affect the potato industry and the marketability of products that may contain soil.

CFIA controls and prevents the spread of these pests by restricting the movement of soil and articles carrying soil from NL. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in the seizure of articles, fines of up to $25,000 and/or prosecution.

Completing the declaration form

All travellers leaving NL must complete the declaration form in advance of arriving at the ferry terminal to avoid processing delays. One declaration per vehicle may be completed for all travellers in the vehicle. Give your completed declaration to CFIA at the ferry terminal when you leave NL.

Please communicate with a local CFIA inspection office at least five days before leaving NL if you answer "yes" to any of the questions.
