General

  • Origin & Breeding: bred by the USDA from (A501-13 x Kennebec) in 1961 and selected at the Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Centre, Prosser, Washington, in 1963.
  • Year registered in Canada: 1977
  • Registration No.: 1770
  • Maturity: late

Botanical Features

  • Plants: large, upright to spreading; stems large; nodes not swollen.
  • Leaves: open, large, slightly pubescent; midribs lighter green than leaves, slightly pubescent.
    Terminal leaflets: ovate; tip acute; base symmetrical.
    Primary leaflets; ovate, three pairs.
    Secondary leaflets: numerous.
    Tertiary leaflets: few to none.
  • Flowers: white, on moderately pubescent green buds.
  • Tubers: oblong; smooth russet-coloured skin; shallow eyes; white flesh.
  • Sprouts: bluish purple.

Agricultural Features

Medium yielding variety; adapted to hot dry conditions; high percentage of marketable tubers; grades well with few culls; very few external or internal bruise problems; long dormancy period. Low total glycoalkaloids and high total solids.

NOTE: seed should be warmed prior to planting to help overcome the long dormancy and to ensure earlier emergence.

  • Utilization: good for boiling, baking, and chipping; good to excellent for french frying.
  • Chief Market: fresh market on the West Coast of North America.

Reaction to Diseases

Resistant: common scab, late blight, tuber net necrosis.
Moderately resistant: rhizoctonia, verticillium wilt (Verticillium albo-atrum).
Susceptible: early blight, fusarium dry rot, leaf roll, PVS, PVX.
