Notice to industry: Full implementation of the Spotted lanternfly directive (D-24-01) - Domestic and import phytosanitary requirements

January 19, 2026

We published the Directive D-24-01: Spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) – Domestic and import phytosanitary requirements on October 2, 2025. This directive describes the phytosanitary import and domestic requirements for nursery stock and logs of deciduous species with bark from regulated areas of the continental United States (U.S.) to prevent the introduction and spread of spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) into Canada. A four-month transition period was established to give the forest products industry time to apply for and obtain import permits for deciduous logs with bark, as well as to identify and address any implementation challenges.

February 2, 2026, marks the end of the transition period for importing logs of deciduous species and the beginning of the full implementation of D-24-01:Spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) – Domestic and import phytosanitary requirements. Deciduous logs with bark attached entering Canada from Regulated areas of the U.S.  must have a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Phytosanitary Certificate or a CFIA- issued Permit to Import.

Please contact your local CFIA office for more information on the spotted lanternfly program.
