Notice to industry – Updated requirements for fertilizer and supplement products that are, or contain, polymers

March 30, 2021

Who this affects

This notice is of interest to members of the Canadian fertilizer and supplement industry, manufacturers of polymers intended to be used with a fertilizer or supplement, seed coaters and producers of growing media that contain polymers.

What has changed

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded its interpretation of the definition of a "supplement" under the Fertilizers Act to include materials that act either directly or indirectly to improve the condition of soils, or to aid plant growth or crop yield.

As a result, the CFIA has updated its requirements for fertilizer and supplement products that are, or contain, polymers.

We encourage you to advise your polymer suppliers about this notice to industry if they are not aware of the requirements under the Fertilizers Regulations.
