Separation of oil in natural peanut butter

Occasionally, you may find an oily substance at the top of your jar of natural peanut butter. This is the oil separating from the natural peanut butter.

How separation of oil occurs

Since natural peanut butter is made without the use of added stabilizers (such as, hydrogenated oil), the peanuts' natural oils separate and rise to the top of the jar.

Product safety

Oil separation is completely natural and does not pose a health risk.

What to do if you find oil separation

  • Simply stir the natural peanut butter to mix the oil back in; or
  • Store the natural peanut butter upside down to force the oil to mix back into the peanut butter on its own. When the oil ends up at the bottom of the jar, store it right-side-up again. Repeat as the oil rises to the top of the jar.
