Updates to Guidelines for Highlighted Ingredients and Flavours

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has developed additional guidance for industry on claims that highlight ingredients or flavours on food labels and advertisements, such as "made with fruit" or "cherry flavoured ice cream".

The Guidelines for Highlighted Ingredients and Flavours clarifies existing requirements on how to highlight parts of a food product without misleading consumers on the composition.

For example, a label cannot overemphasize the presence of an ingredient to make their product seem more desirable to a consumer.

The objective of these guidelines is to help industry meet labelling regulations and provide consumers with meaningful information about the food they purchase.

These Guidelines have been drafted based on extensive research, consultation and public opinion research.
