Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'PRO81', 'Gallus' and 'JDC78'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is low for 'Adrianus' whereas the frequency is medium for 'PRO81' and 'JDC78' and it is absent or very low for 'Gallus'. The flag leaf of 'Adrianus' is longer than that of 'PRO81' and 'Gallus', narrower than that of 'Gallus' and wider than than of 'JDC78'. At heading, the culm neck of 'Adrianus' has a strong degree of glaucosity whereas it is of a weak degree for 'PRO81' and 'JDC78'. The awns at the tip of the spike of 'Adrianus' are shorter than the spike whereas the awns are longer than the spike for 'Gallus'. At maturity, the plants of 'Adrianus' are shorter than the plants of 'PRO81' and 'Gallus' and taller than the plants of 'JDC78'. Excluding the awns, the spike of 'Adrianus' is shorter than that of 'Gallus' and 'JDC78'. The attitude of the spike for 'Adrianus' is erect whereas it is inclined for 'PRO81' and 'Gallus'. The culm of 'Adrianus' has a straight neck whereas that of 'JDC78' has a curved neck. The lower glume shoulder of 'Adrianus' is of medium width whereas it is narrow for 'Gallus'. The lower glume shoulder shape is sloping to slightly sloping for 'Adrianus' whereas it is straight for 'JDC78' and elevated for 'PRO81'. The thousand kernel weight of 'Adrianus' is greater than that of 'PRO81' and 'JDC78' and lower than that of 'Gallus'.

Description:

PLANT: common wheat, winter type, semi-erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong degree glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: strong degree of glaucosity, straight neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross section, no anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: strong degree of glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, dense, white at maturity, erect attitude
AWNS: shorter than spike length, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, sloping to slightly sloping shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, moderately curved shape

KERNEL: hard red type, medium red, medium to large size, medium to long, medium width, oval, rounded cheek, short brush hairs, medium width and depth of crease
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good winter survival

BREAD MAKING QUALITY: good

Origin & Breeding History: 'Adrianus' (experimental designations SZD7663 and CM16-011) originated from the cross between 'Midas' and the F1 progeny designated as H384, conducted in Probstdorf, Austria, in 2007. H384 originated from the cross between 'Mv Kolo' and 'Priesley'. The variety was developed using a modified pedigree selection with off-season generation in Temuco, Chile. Single plant selections were made from the F3 to F7 generations based on milling and bread making quality, yield, lodging resistance and disease resistance. A single plant selection at the F7 generation, designated as SZD7663, was increased and breeder seed was bulked at the F9 generation from four sublines.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Adrianus' were conducted during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons in Palmerston, Ontario. Plots consisted of 8 rows, with a row length of 4 metres and row spacing of 15 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
