Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Unity' and 'Glenn'
Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the coleoptile for 'AAC Magnet' is absent or very weak whereas it is weak for 'Unity'. At booting, the intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the auricles of the flag leaf for 'AAC Magnet' is absent or very weak whereas it is of medium to strong intensity for 'Glenn'.
Description:
PLANT: common hard red spring type, intermediate between semi-erect and semi-prostrate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves
SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM: medium glaucosity, curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin to medium pith in cross-section
SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, lax to medium density, light brown to yellow at maturity, erect attitude, absent or very sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than or equal to spike length, white to light brown
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, narrow to medium width, glabrous, absent or very sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: slightly sloping to straight shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, slightly curved shape
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak
KERNEL: medium red, medium size, medium length, narrow to medium width, oval to ovate, rounded cheek, medium length brush hairs, narrow to medium width of crease, shallow to medium depth of crease
GERM: small to medium sized from dorsal view, oval shape
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: fair resistance to pre-harvest sprouting
BREAD MAKING QUALITY: fair
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Magnet' (experimental designations BW1045 and BJ14*A0135) originated from a cross made between BW388 and BW430 in 2010 at the Cereal Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Morden, Manitoba. In 2011, F1 plants were used to produce double haploids, which were then grown at a winter nursery near Leeston, New Zealand and selected for plant height, lodging resistance, maturity and leaf rust resistance. In 2012, unreplicated yield tests and selections for agronomic characteristics, disease resistance and quality were conducted. A selected line was advanced and evaluated in the Central Bread Wheat 'A' tests in 2013 and 'B' tests in 2014 at various locations throughout western Canada. From 2015 to 2017, the line designated as BW1045, was included in the Central Bread Wheat 'C' registration trials.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Magnet' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Saskatoon Research and Development Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons. Plots consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.35 m and a row spacing of 18 cm. There were three replications arranged in a RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 21 measurements per variety per year.
