Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is medium for 'JDC78' whereas it is absent or very low for 'Gallus'. The flag leaf of 'JDC78' is narrower than that of 'Gallus'. The glaucosity of the flag leaf sheath is absent or very weak for 'JDC78' whereas it is of a medium degree for 'Gallus'. The glaucosity of the spike for 'JDC78' is of a medium degree whereas it is strong for 'Gallus'. The glaucosity of the culm neck for 'JDC78' is of a weak degree whereas it is strong for 'Gallus'. At maturity, the plants of 'JDC78' are shorter than those of 'Gallus'. The spike of 'JDC78' is shorter than that of 'Gallus'. The culm of 'JDC78' has a curved neck whereas that of 'Gallus' has a straight neck. The lower glume shoulder for 'JDC78' is of medium width and straight whereas it is narrow and slightly sloping for 'Gallus'. The kernel is broad elliptical in shape for 'JDC78' whereas it is oval for 'Gallus'. The kernel weight for 'JDC78' is less than that of 'Gallus'.

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, absent or very weak glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: weak to medium degree of glaucosity, curved neck
STRAW: thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

SPIKE: medium degree of glaucosity, tapering, medium to dense, white at maturity, erect to inclined attitude, absent or very sparse to sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than length of spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, straight
LOWER GLUME: long, narrow to medium, glabrous
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long, slightly curved shape
KERNEL: hard red, dark red, medium to large size, long, narrow to medium width, broad elliptical, rounded cheek, medium to long brush hairs, narrow crease of medium depth

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good winter survival

BREAD MAKING QUALITY: good

Origin & Breeding History: 'JDC78' (experimental designation ACS59115) originated from the cross between 'Ataya' and 'Strumrok' made in Oberlimpurg, Germany, in 2002. Single plant selections were made from the F2 to F9 generations based on milling and bread making quality, yield, lodging resistance and disease resistance. A single plant selection in the F9 generation, designated as ACS59115, was increased and breeder seed bulked at the F11 generation.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'JDC78' were conducted during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons in Palmerston, Ontario. Plots consisted of 8 rows, with a row length of 4 metres and a row spacing of 15 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
