Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'McKenzie' and 'Glenn'

Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile is absent or very weak for 'SY Rowyn' whereas it is strong for 'McKenzie'. The anthocyanin colouration of the auricles of the flag leaf is of medium intensity for 'SY Rowyn' whereas it is absent or very weak for 'McKenzie'. The flag leaf of 'SY Rowyn' is longer than the flag leaf of 'McKenzie' and narrower than the flag leaf of both reference varieties. The spike and culm neck of 'SY Rowyn' have medium glaucosity while those of both reference varieties have weak glaucosity. The plants of 'SY Rowyn' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. The hairiness of the convex surface of the apical rachis segment of the spike of 'SY Rowyn' is very sparse to sparse while that of 'McKenzie' is sparse to medium density and that of 'Glenn' is of medium density. The shoulder shape of the lower glume of 'SY Rowyn' is slightly sloping to straight whereas the shoulder of the both reference varieties is straight to elevated. The lower glume beak of 'SY Rowyn' is long and slightly curved whereas the beak of the reference varieties is short and straight. 'SY Rowyn' has a lighter thousand kernel weight than both reference varieties. The brush hairs of the kernel of 'SY Rowyn' are long while they are of medium length for 'McKenzie' and short for 'Glenn'.

Description:

PLANT: spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: very high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, weak glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: medium glaucosity, straight to curved neck
STRAW: medium thickness of pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

SPIKE: medium glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, lax to medium density, golden/tan at maturity, nodding attitude, very sparse to sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than spike, whitish golden
LOWER GLUME: long, narrow, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: slightly sloping to straight shape, narrow
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak

KERNEL: hard red type, medium red, medium sized, medium length and width, oval shape, rounded cheek, long brush hairs, narrow and shallow crease
GERM: medium sized, elliptical

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Leaf rust (Puccina recondita), moderately resistant to Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici) and Stripe Rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici), moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species), susceptible to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida)

Origin & Breeding History: 'SY Rowyn' (experimental designation 'HY2013') originated from the cross '00S0323-7'/'N92-0098'/'99S0051-3-1'. The original cross was made in Berthoud, Colorado in 2003. Individual head selections were made from an F2 population in Park River, North Dakota based on height and leaf rust in 2004. Single seed descent technique was used to advance selections through the F3 and F4 generations in the greenhouse during the fall of 2004 and 2005. In 2005, F5 head rows were planted and screened for disease resistance and agronomic characteristics in Argusville, North Dakota followed by an F6 increase plot grown in the same location and observation plots in North Dakota, South Dakota and Manitoba grown in 2006. 'SY Rowyn' was tested in multi-location research trials from 2007 to 2012. In 2008, 75 heads were pulled from the seed increase plot in Argusville and grown in 2009.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'SY Rowyn' were conducted during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons near Rosebank, Manitoba. Plots consisted of three replications arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design. Plots were 3.72 metres squared with a planting density of 2400 plants per plot in 3 metre rows spaced 18 cm apart. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per plant or parts of plants, resulting in a total of 40 measurements over 2 years. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
