Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Abbey', 'AC Eatonia' and 'Leader'

Summary: 'Lillian' has anthocyanin present in the coleoptile while 'AC Abbey' has no anthocyanin. 'Lillian' has a wider flag leaf than the reference varieties. 'Lillian' has no anthocyanin in the leaf auricles while 'AC Eatonia' and 'Leader' have strong anthocyanin. 'Lillian' has a taller plant height than 'AC Abbey'. The spike attitude is incline for 'Lillian' while it is erect for 'Leader'. 'Lillian' has awnlets present while 'AC Abbey' has awns. 'Lillian' has a slightly shorter spike than 'AC Abbey' and a longer spike than 'Leader'. 'Lillian' has a shorter beak length on the glume than 'AC Abbey'. 'Lillian' has a more angular cheek shape on the kernel than 'AC Abbey'.

Description:

'Lillian' is a spring wheat that has weak to medium anthocyanin in the coleoptile and sparse pubescence on the sheaths and blades of the lower leaves. 'Lillian' has an intermediate growth habit with a medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf has very sparse pubescence on the blade and sheath, no anthocyanin colouration on the leaf auricles and a medium to strong glaucosity on the sheath. The neck of the culm has weak to medium glaucosity and is very slightly curved. The straw has very weak anthocyanin colouration and the pith is medium to thick in cross section.

'Lillian' has a tapering to parallel shaped spike that is moderately dense, incline in attitude and white in colour with medium to strong glaucosity at maturity. The spike has awnlets present that are short in length. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume is a mixture of slightly sloping, straight and elevated. The shoulder is medium in width. The beak of the lower glume is very short and slightly curved in shape.

'Lillian' has a hard red kernel type that is medium red in colour and medium to large in size. The kernel is medium to long in length and medium in width. The elliptical to ovate shaped kernel has a moderately angular cheek shape, medium length brush hairs, and a mid sized, oval to round shaped embryo. The kernel crease is medium in width and mid deep in depth.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Lillian' was derived from the cross BW621*3/90B07-AU2B, made in 1995 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Eight F1 plants were selected using a DNA marker associated with high protein content and were backcrossed to BW621. The BC2F1 plants were selected using the high protein marker. Double haploid lines were derived form the resulting BC2F1 population. 156 lines were increased in New Zealand during the winter of 1996-97 and subsequently tested for agronomic performance, rust resistance and protein content at four locations in Manitoba in 1997. Selected lines were transferred to Swift Current and grown at five locations in 1998 and seven locations in 1999. The experimental line 95B23*NE16 was evaluated in the Western Bread Wheat Cooperative tests from 2000 to 2002 under the experimental designation BW776. The denomination was changed to 'Lillian' in 2003.

Tests & Trials: 'Lillian' was tested at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Center, Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 2002 and 2003. Plots consisted of 4 rows measuring 3 meters in length spaced 0.23 meters apart. There were 4 replicates and a randomized block experimental design was used.
