Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'AC Barrie'

Summary: '5601HR' differs from the reference variety 'AC Barrie' in plant height, spike density and glume shoulder shape. The plants of '5601HR' are taller than those of 'AC Barrie'. Spike density of '5601HR' is medium whereas it is dense in 'AC Barrie'. The glume shoulders of '5601HR' are slightly sloping to straight whereas they are elevated in 'AC Barrie'.

Description:

'5601HR' is a hard red spring wheat with no anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile. The sheaths and blades of the lower seedling leaves are glabrous. It has an erect growth habit with a very high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf blade and sheath are glabrous, with very weak to weak anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles and medium glaucosity of the sheath. '5601HR' matures mid to late in the season. The culm has weak glaucosity and is weakly curved. The straw has no anthocyanin colouration at maturity and the pith is thin in cross section.

The spike of '5601HR' is tapering in shape, is medium in density, nodding in attitude, white in colour with very weak to weak glaucosity at maturity. The spike awnlets are short and white. It has medium hairiness of the convex surface of the apical rachis segment. The lower glume of the spikelet is medium in width and length with weak to medium pubescence. The shoulder is slightly sloping to straight and medium in width. The beak of the lower glume is straight and very short. The internal hairs of the lower glume are sparse. The beak of the lemma is slightly curved.

The kernels of '5601HR' are medium red in colour and medium in size, length, and width. The ovate kernel has a rounded cheek with mid-long brush hairs, and a mid-size oval shaped embryo. The kernel crease is mid-wide and mid-deep.

'5601HR' has good pre-harvest sprouting tendency with good bread making qualities. '5601HR' is moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum), Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) and Loose smut (Ustilago tritici). It is moderately resistant to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and resistant to stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici).

Origin & Breeding History: '5601HR' originated from the cross 'N93-2410/BW173' made in Berthoud, Colorado in 1993. N93-2410 was a UGG/AgriPro experimental breeding line with the pedigree 'MN72141/MN72145//Columbus/3 /Katepwa'. A modified pedigree breeding method using single seed descent was used in developing the variety. Individual head selections were made from an F2 population of this cross at the Proven Seed Research Farm at Rosebank, Manitoba in 1994. Selections in the F2 were based on leaf rust resistance, height and maturity. The F3 and F4 generations were advanced in the greenhouse using the single seed descent method. Individual F5 headrows were bulked from the 1995 selection nursery at Rosebank. Selection criteria for this generation included those previously used along with resistance to stem rust, tan spot and Septoria leaf spot. The F6 generation was increased in an off-season nursery in New Zealand during 1995-96. One of these bulks was designated UGG96-2428 and was tested in Proven Seed research plots in 1996 and 1997. During these seasons, it was evaluated for yield, test weight, height, lodging, maturity, leaf rust, stem rust, foliar diseases, seed dormancy, kernel type and breadmaking quality. UGG96-2428 was entered and tested as BW256 in the Central Bread Co-op trials during the 1998 to 2000 seasons.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for '5601HR' were conducted at Rosebank, Manitoba during the summers of 2001 and 2002. Each plot consisted of three replicates/variety with six rows/replicate. The plots were approximately 3.6 square meters.
