Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'S12-A5', 'Bakara', 'Karra' and 'Cypress'

Summary: The hypocotyl of 'Vegas' has no anthocyanin colouration whereas the hypocotyl of 'Bakara' and 'Karra' have anthocyanin colouration. The flower colour for 'Vegas' is white whereas it is violet for 'Bakara' and 'Karra'. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the pubescence on the middle third of the stem of 'Vegas' is tawny whereas the pubescence is grey on 'S12-A5' and 'Cypress'. The plants of 'Vegas' are taller than the plants of 'S12-A5' and 'Cypress'. When 95% of the pods are ripe, 'Vegas' has a light to medium brown pod colour whereas the pod is medium to dark brown for 'Karra'. The plants of 'Vegas' mature later than the plants of 'S12-A5', 'Karra' and 'Cypress'. At maturity, the colour of the hilum on 'Vegas' is imperfect yellow whereas it is yellow on 'Bakara' and 'Cypress' and medium brown on 'S12-A5'. The degree of glossiness of the seed of 'Vegas' is medium whereas it is absent or weak for the seed of 'S12-A5', 'Karra' and 'Cypress' and strong for 'Bakara'.

HILUM: imperfect yellow

Origin & Breeding History: 'Vegas' (experimental designation SEMS13-833) originated from a cross between the varieties 'Eider' and 'Katrina' conducted in 2010 in Ste-Rosalie, Quebec, Canada. Mass selection and an alternating modified single seed descent method was initially used to develop the variety. From 2010 to 2012, seed density was evaluated in the F1 to F4 generations with seeds harvested in bulk in Ste-Rosalie, Quebec. In 2012, individual plants were selected from the F4 generation in Ste-Rosalie based on a visual assessment of lodging resistance and disease resistance. From 2013 to 2018, a line designated as SEMS13-833 was evaluated based on yield, protein content and hilum colour in five locations in Quebec. The line was advanced to the public trials of the Réseaux Grandes Cultures du Quebec from 2017 to 2018. F9 rows were planted with true to type rows harvested in bulk in 2017, and the bulk was sown in 2018 for breeder seed production.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Vegas' were conducted at Céréla Inc. in St-Hugues, Quebec in 2020 and 2021. Each trial was arranged in a RCB design with 2 replicates. Each 7.25 metre squared plot consisted of 4 rows, each row 5 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 0.35 metres. The seeding density was 42 seeds per squared metre, which resulted in a minimum of 504 plants per variety each year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's t-tests.
