Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'OAC Wallace' and 'OAC Lakeview'

Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration on the hypocotyl of 'OAC Strive' is strong whereas it is of medium intensity on 'OAC Wallace'. When 50% of the flowers are open, the branching attitude of 'OAC Strive' is erect to semi-erect whereas 'OAC Wallace' has a semi-erect to horizontal branch attitude. The hairs on the middle third of the main stem of 'OAC Strive' are tawny whereas they are light tawny on 'OAC Wallace' and grey on 'OAC Lakeview'. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'OAC Strive' are taller than the plants of 'OAC Wallace'. The leaf of 'OAC Strive' has absent or very weak blistering whereas 'OAC Wallace' has a weak degree of blistering and that of 'OAC Lakeview' has a medium degree of blistering. The lateral and terminal leaflets of 'OAC Strive' are medium in size whereas they are large for 'OAC Wallace' and 'OAC Lakeview'. When 95% of the pods are ripe, 'OAC Strive' has a dark brown pod colour whereas the pod is light brown for 'OAC Lakeview'. The colour of the hilum on 'OAC Strive' is imperfect yellow whereas it is dark brown on 'OAC Wallace' and yellow on 'OAC Lakeview'. The seed of 'OAC Strive' has strong glaucosity whereas that of 'OAC Wallace' has weak glaucosity and that of 'OAC Lakeview' has medium glaucosity. The plants of 'OAC Strive' are earlier maturing than those of 'OAC Wallace'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'OAC Strive' (experimental designation SeCan 11-12C) originated from the cross between 'Colby' and 'S03-W4' conducted in 2006 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. The crossed material was derived by Single Seed descent technique until the F4 generation when a single plant was selected based on maturity and agronomic traits in 2007. Seed from this plant was harvested and maintained by pedigree selection until the F4:7 generation when 25 plants were selected for morphological uniformity in 2010. The line, designated as SeCan 11-12C, was tested in the 2600 Heat Unit Private Ontario Soybean Variety Trials in 2011 and in the 2600 Heat Unit Public Ontario Soybean Variety Trials in 2012 and 2013.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'OAC Strive' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Elora Research Station of the University of Guelph, in Elora, Ontario. The trial was arranged in a RCB design and consisted of four replicates per variety with four rows per replication. Plots were approximately 1.5 by 5 metres with a row spacing of 43 centimetres. Measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of 20 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student t-test.
