The flower colour for 'Scablhatis' is violet while for 'Newon' it is a bluer violet. The secondary colour, distributed as a central stripe on each petal, is bright violet fading to lighter violet for 'Scablhatis' while it is violet to blue violet for 'Newon'.

Description:

'Scablhatis' is a vegetatively propagated, annual scaevola variety with semi-erect to horizontal plant growth habit and moderate degree of branching. Basal branching is strong. The stems are medium in thickness, smooth, medium green with moderate to strong anthocyanin colouration and very sparse pubescence. The leaves are a simple type and arranged alternately along the stem. The leaf blade is spatulate with an acute to cuspidate shaped apex and attenuate shaped base. The margin of the immature leaf is entire and the margin of the fully developed leaf is dentate. The upper side of the leaf blade is dark green with sparse pubescence. The lower side of the leaf blade is light to medium green with sparse pubescence on the mid-rib only. There is no variegation on the leaf blade.

'Scablhatis' begins flowering mid-season and flowers almost continuously for a long time. There is one fan shaped flower positioned at each leaf axil. The petal margins are entire and have moderate undulation. The inner side of the petal is violet with a bright violet central stripe which fades as the flower ages. The outer side of the petal is violet. The petals are oblanceolate with a mucronate shaped apex. Arrangement of the petals is touching to overlapping. The throat of the corolla is yellow on the inner side and pale yellow on the outer side. Pubescence on the throat of the corolla is dense.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Scablhatis' originated from a controlled cross conducted in April of 1999 by the breeder Gabriel Danziger at Danziger Flower Farm in Beit Dagan, Israel. The female parent was a scaevola selection designated 'SC-100' and the male parent was an open-pollinated, unknown variety. 'Scablhatis' was selected in April of 2000 based on its plant growth habit and early flowering.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Scablhatis' was conducted in a poly-house during the summer of 2005 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of each variety. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings which were transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 RHS colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
