Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Queen Elizabeth'

Summary: The anthocyanin colouration of the young shoot of 'Radbeauty' is of weak intensity while that of 'Queen Elizabeth' is of medium intensity. The terminal leaf of 'Radbeauty' is smaller than that of 'Queen Elizabeth'. When newly unfolded, the anthocyanin colouration of the upper side of the leaflet of 'Radbeauty' is of weak to medium intensity while that of 'Queen Elizabeth' is of strong intensity. The flower of 'Radbeauty' is smaller in diameter than that of 'Queen Elizabeth'. When fully opened, the inner side of the petal of 'Radbeauty' is medium to light blue pink with medium purple red towards the margin fading with age to light violet to light blue pink with light blue pink towards the margin while that of 'Queen Elizabeth' is light blue pink with medium blue pink towards the margin. The filament of the outer stamen of 'Radbeauty' is medium yellow whereas that of 'Queen Elizabeth' is pink to red.

LEAF: medium green on upper side, no anthocyanin colouration, medium glossiness on upper side, weak undulation along margin
TERMINAL LEAF BLADE: ovate shape, obtuse to rounded base, acute apex

FLOWERING SHOOT: very few flowering laterals, very few flowers per lateral
FLOWER BUD: medium to broad ovate shape in longitudinal section, light red pink (RHS 36B-C) on outer side, medium purple red (close to RHS N57C) on inner side
FLOWER: double type, pink colour group, medium petal density, round shape when viewed from above, profile of upper part is flattened convex, profile of lower part is concave, weak to medium fragrance, weak sepal extensions
PETAL: reflexing of petals one-by-one, broadly obovate to obcordate shape, absent or very weak incisions, absent or very weak to medium reflexing of margin, weak undulation along margin, one very shaded colour on inner side, colour intensity is lighter towards base, medium blue pink to light blue pink (RHS 62B-C) with medium purple red (RHS N57C) towards margin on inner and outer side, ages to light violet to light blue pink (RHS 75C-D) with light blue pink (RHS 68B) towards margin, no secondary colour on inner side

Origin & Breeding History: 'Radbeauty' originated from a cross conducted by William J. Radler in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. in June 2004 between two unnamed seedlings. In September 2007, 'Radbeauty' was selected for trials and evaluation based on its plant growth habit, plant vigour, leaf colour and appearance and flower shape and colour.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Radbeauty' was conducted as an outdoor trial during the summer of 2021 at BioFlora, Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 plants of the candidate variety and 8 plants of the reference variety. Plants were grown from bare-rooted cuttings and transplanted into 11.4 litre containers on May 15, 2021. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety on July 26, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
