'Poulbambe' has narrower leaves, smaller terminal leaflets and shorter sepals than 'Topaz Jewel'. 'Poulbambe' has smaller flowers with shorter petals than 'Topaz Jewel' and larger flowers with longer petals than 'Poulgode'. The outer side of the flower bud is light yellow orange with orange tones for 'Poulbambe' while it is light yellow for 'Topaz Jewel' and yellow for 'Poulgode'. 'Poulbambe' has weaker undulation of the petal margins and smaller receptacle than 'Topaz Jewel'.

Description:

'Poulbambe' is a shrub rose variety. The young shoots have no anthocyanin colouration. The stems have an average number of long prickles which are yellow with a red base and linear to slightly concave in shape. The leaves are dark green and have weak glossiness on the upper side. There are five leaflets per leaf. The terminal leaflet has a serrated margin and obtuse shaped base. The texture of the terminal leaflet is thin and flexible.

'Poulbambe' has a low to medium number of flowers per flowering shoot. The flower pedicel has few hairs. The flower bud is globular in shape when viewed in longitudinal section. The colour of the flower bud (¼ open) is light yellow orange on the inner side and light yellow orange with orange tones on the outer side. The sepals have absent to weak sepal extensions.

The flower type for 'Poulbambe' is very full (40+ petals per flower). The shape of the fully opened flower when viewed from above is round. When viewed from the side, the upper part is flat to concave and the lower part is concave. The fully opened flower is light yellow fading to lighter yellow as it matures. The petals have a small, yellow petal spot at the base on both the inner and outer sides. The petal margins have absent to weak reflexing and absent to very weak undulation. The filaments of the outer stamens are yellow. The style is yellow and medium to long. The stigma is positioned at the same level to below the anthers. The receptacle is small and funnel shaped with no prickles on the outer surface. 'Poulbambe' has a medium to strong fragrance.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Poulbambe' originated from a cross conducted in the summer of 1993 between the varieties 'Poultrav' and 'Poulurt'. The resulting seeds were planted in December of 1993 and germinated during the winter and early spring. The cross and selection took place in the greenhouses of Poulsen Roser A/S located in Fredensborg, Denmark. 'Poulbambe' was selected in the spring of 1994 based on the objective of this hybridization which was to create a new and distinct rose variety for use in the garden. Selection criteria included uniform and abundant amber yellow flowers, vigorous but compact growth when propagated both as a budded rose and on its own roots and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Poulbambe' was conducted during the summer of 2005 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. There were 8 plants per variety. The roses were field planted in July of 2004 with the exception of 'Poulgode' which was field planted in the early spring of 2005. The rose plants were spaced 60 cm apart with a 90 cm row spacing. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
