Origin & Breeding History: 'Lady Liberty' originated from the cross between 'B38-14', as the female parent, and 'Marcy', as the male parent. The cross was conducted in Ithaca, New York, USA in early 2006. Seeds from the cross were first grown in pots in 2007 in Mount Pleasant, New York, USA and four tubers from each pot then grown in the field in 2008. The initial selection of 'Lady Liberty' was made in the fall of 2008 based on appearance and yield. Clones of the field trial selections were then established and further evaluated in the field in 2009. In each successive year, evaluation plots were increased with further selections made based on chip characteristics, cold storage, external tuber appearance, presence of internal and external defects, resistance to common scab, specific gravity, maturity and yield.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Lady Liberty' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. in Central Blissville, New Brunswick during the 2022 growing season. The field trial consisted of a single, 22 metre long row per variety. Each row contained 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart with inter-row spacing of 1.1 metres. Measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Lightsprout characteristics were assessed on 10 tubers harvested from the comparative trial and observed approximately 2.5 to 3 months after sprouting was promoted by exposing the tubers to an external agent.
