Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Shepody'

Summary: The shape of the lightsprout of 'Crop56' is spherical whereas it is ovoid for 'Shepody'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout is strong to very strong with a high proportion of blue for 'Crop56' while it is of medium intensity with an absent or low proportion of blue for 'Shepody'. The pubescence at the base of the lightsprout for 'Crop56' is of a medium density while it is dense for 'Shepody'. In relation to the base, the lightsprout tip is small for 'Crop56' while it is medium sized for 'Shepody'. The plant foliage structure is stem type for 'Crop56' whereas it is leaf type for 'Shepody'. The plant growth habit for 'Crop56' is upright whereas it is semi-upright for 'Shepody'. The anthocyanin colouration on the stem for 'Crop56' is of a medium to high extent while it is absent or very low for 'Shepody'. The midrib on the upper side of the leaf for 'Crop56' has anthocyanin colouration of a low extent with weak to medium intensity whereas it is of an absent or very low extent with absent or very weak intensity for 'Shepody'. The second pair of lateral leaflets are small to medium for 'Crop56' while they are large for 'Shepody'. The plants of 'Crop56' are taller than those of 'Shepody'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla for 'Crop 56' is strong with a medium proportion of blue while it is weak to medium with an absent or low proportion of blue for 'Shepody'. The plants of 'Crop56' mature very late in the season while the plants of 'Shepody' mature mid-season. The tuber of 'Crop56' has shallow eyes and light yellow flesh while that of 'Shepody' has eyes at a medium depth and white flesh.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Crop56' (experimental designation 4355-5) originated from the cross between 'Summer Delight', as the female parent, and 'Crop20', as the male parent, conducted at The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited, in Lincoln, New Zealand, in 2000. The resulting seed was sown in a glasshouse in Lincoln, New Zealand in 2000 and seedling selections made in 2001and 2002. Resulting tubers were field planted in 2002. Selections were made through 10 vegetatively propagated generations resulting in the identification of 4355-5 in 2012. Selection criteria were based on yield, tuber shape, size and finish.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Crop56' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
