Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'FL2385'

Summary: The base of the lightsprout for 'FL2387' has a medium density of pubescence whereas that of 'FL2385' has sparse pubescence. In relation to the base, the lightsprout tip of 'FL2387' is medium in size whereas it is small for 'FL2385'. The lightsprout tip of 'FL2387' has an intermediate habit and medium to dense pubescence whereas that of 'FL2385' has a closed habit and sparse pubescence. The upper side of the leaf of 'FL2387' is light green with a low extent of anthocyanin on the midrib whereas the leaf of 'FL2385' is medium to dark green with a high extent of anthocyanin colouration on the midrib. The extent of anthocyanin colouration on the flower bud of 'FL2387' is low to medium whereas it is high for 'FL2385'. The plants of 'FL2387' are shorter than those of 'FL2385'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of 'FL2387' is strong to very strong whereas it is medium to strong for 'FL2385'. In reaction to light, the anthocyanin colouration on the tuber skin is strong for 'FL2387' whereas it is weak to medium for 'FL2385'.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: medium, ovoid, medium number of root tips, short lateral shoots

LIGHTSPROUT TIP: medium size in relation to base, intermediate between closed and open habit, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium to dense pubescence

PLANT: foliage structure is intermediate type where foliage is half-open and stems are partly visible, semi-upright growth habit, matures mid-season

STEM: low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration halfway up stem

LEAF: medium size outline, intermediate openness, weak to medium presence of secondary leaflets, light green upper side, low extent and medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of upper side of midrib, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets
SECOND PAIR OF LATERAL LEAFLETS: medium size, leaflet is narrower than long
LEAFLET: weak to medium waviness of margin, shallow to medium depth of veins, medium to glossy upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette

PEDUNCLE: absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration
INFLORESCENCE: high frequency per plant, medium to large
FLOWER BUD: low to medium extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: large
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): high to very high extent of anthocyanin colouration on inner side, strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration on inner side, high proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration on inner side

TUBER: short oval, white flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow to medium depth, yellow at base
TUBER SKIN: light beige, develops strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration in reaction to light

Origin & Breeding History: 'FL2387' (experimental designation 2008 6.03) originated from the cross between '2001 312.08' and 'FL 1922' conducted in 2007 at the Frito-Lay Research and Development Facility near Rhineland, Wisconsin, USA. Seed resulting from the cross was grown in a greenhouse and the resulting seed tubers field planted in 2008. One progeny, designated as 2008 6.03, was identified in 2008. Selection criteria were based on negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics, disease resistance and fry colour after tuber storage.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'FL2387' was conducted by Global Agri Services Inc. during the 2018 growing season in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single, 21 metre long row containing 70 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The mean difference was significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
