Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Cecile'

Summary: The lightsprout of 'Red Snapper' is ovoid in shape, medium sized and has short lateral shoots whereas that of 'Cecile' is broad cylindrical in shape, large and has medium length lateral shoots. The pubescence of the lightsprout is dense to very dense at the base and sparse at the tip on 'Red Snapper' whereas the density of the pubescence is medium at the base and dense at the tip of the lightsprout on 'Cecile'. The tip of the lightsprout has a closed habit and is small in relation to the base for 'Red Snapper' whereas that of 'Cecile' has an open habit and is medium size in relation to the base. The anthocyanin colouration at the tip of the lightsprout is of medium intensity for 'Red Snapper' whereas it is strong for 'Cecile'. The foliage structure of 'Red Snapper' is a leaf type with the foliage closed and stems not, or hardly, visible whereas that of 'Cecile' is a stem type with the foliage open and stems clearly visible. The frequency of coalescence of the terminal and lateral leaflets is absent or very low for 'Red Snapper' whereas it is low to medium in 'Cecile'. At the apical rosette, the leaflet blade of 'Red Snapper' is glabrous whereas the leaflet blade for 'Cecile' is pubescent. The anthocyanin colouration of the flower bud is of medium extent for 'Red Snapper' whereas it is low for 'Cecile'. The plant of 'Red Snapper' is shorter than that of 'Cecile'. The plant of 'Red Snapper' matures mid-season whereas that of 'Cecile' matures late in the season.

Description:

LIGHTSPROUT: medium size, ovoid shape, medium number of root tips, short lateral shoots

LIGHTSPROUT TIP: small in relation to base, closed habit, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence

PLANT: foliage structure is leaf type where foliage is closed and stems are not or hardly visible, semi-upright to spreading growth habit, matures mid-season

STEM: high extent of anthocyanin colouration along entire stem

LEAF: outline is medium size, openness is intermediate between closed and open to open, dark green on upper side, high extent and strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration on midrib of upper side, medium presence of secondary leaflets, absent or very low frequency of coalescence of terminal and lateral leaflets

LEAFLET: weak waviness of margin, shallow to medium depth of veins, dull upper side, glabrous blade at apical rosette

INFLORESCENCE: medium frequency per plant, small to medium size
PEDUNCLE: high extent of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER BUD: medium extent of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: medium size, high extent and strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration on inner side, absent or low proportion of blue in anthocyanin colouration on inner side

TUBER: oval to long oval shape, light yellow flesh
TUBER EYE: shallow depth, red at base
TUBER SKIN: red

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Red Snapper' originated from a cross made in 2006 between the selections designated 'BRS 96-164' as the female parent and 'BRS 97-118' as the male parent at the Brunia's private breeding facility in Kraggenburg, The Netherlands. Seed from the cross was sown in the greenhouse in Kraggenburg in 2007. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in the spring of 2008. One of the selected progeny was given the designation 'Red Snapper'. Selection criteria were negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and resistance to various diseases.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Red Snapper' was conducted during the growing season of 2014 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single row with 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
