Variety used for comparison: 'Yukon Gold'

Summary: The size of the tip of the lightsprout in relation to the base is large for 'Cascada' whereas it is medium for 'Yukon Gold'. The anthocyanin colouration at the base of the lightsprout of 'Cascada' is of medium intensity whereas it is strong for 'Yukon Gold'. The pubescence at the base of the lightsprout is sparse to medium on 'Cascada' whereas it is dense on 'Yukon Gold'. The plant of 'Cascada' has a semi-upright growth habit whereas that of 'Yukon Gold' has an upright growth habit. The stem of 'Cascada' has no anthocyanin colouration whereas the extent of anthocyanin colouration is medium along the entire stem for 'Yukon Gold'. The glossiness of the upper side of the leaflet for 'Cascada' is dull whereas it is medium for 'Yukon Gold'. The extent of anthocyanin colouration of the flower bud is absent or very low for 'Cascada' whereas it is medium for 'Yukon Gold'. The plant of 'Cascada' is shorter than that of 'Yukon Gold'. 'Cascada' has a large corolla whereas 'Yukon Gold' has a medium size corolla. On the inner side of the corolla, the extent of the anthocyanin colouration for 'Cascada' is absent or very low whereas it is high for 'Yukon Gold'. The plant of 'Cascada' matures late to very late in the season while that of 'Yukon Gold' matures mid-season. The tuber of 'Cascada' is oval to long oval in shape with dark yellow flesh whereas the tuber of 'Yukon Gold' is short oval in shape with light yellow flesh. The colour at the base of the eye on the tuber of 'Cascada' is yellow whereas it is red on the tuber of 'Yukon Gold'.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Cascada' originated from a cross made in 1999 between 'Solara' as the female parent and 'Gala' as the male parent at the Norika breeding station in Grob Lüsewitz, Germany. Seed from the cross were sown in the greenhouse in 2000. The resulting tubers were harvested and planted in the field in the spring of 2001. One of the selected progeny was given the designation 'Cascada'. Selection criteria were negative mass selection for agronomic characteristics and resistance to various diseases.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Cascada' was conducted during the growing season of 2014 in Drummond, New Brunswick. The trial consisted of a single row with 60 plants spaced 0.3 metres apart for each variety. The distance between rows within the trial was 0.9 metres. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
