Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Adora'

Summary: 'Carrera' has a shorter plant height than 'Adora'. 'Carrera' has weaker anthocyanin in the stem than 'Adora'. 'Carrera' has less persistent flower buds than 'Adora'. 'Carrera' has weaker anthocyanin in the inner surface of the corolla than 'Adora'. 'Carrera' has no anthocyanin in the peduncle while 'Adora' has medium to strong anthocyanin. 'Carrera' produces more anthocyanin in the tuber skin when exposed to the light than 'Adora'. 'Carrera' has a larger light sprout than 'Adora'. The light sprout is broad cylindrical for 'Carrera' while it is ovoid for 'Adora'. 'Carrera' has a higher proportion of blue in the anthocyanin on the light sprout base than 'Adora'.

Description:

'Carrera' has a semi-upright to spreading growth habit and produces an intermediate type plant. The stems are thin to medium and have weak anthocyanin colouration which is distributed in the top half of the stem. The nodes have absent or very low swelling.

'Carrera' has medium green leaves and an intermediate leaf silhouette. The leaf rachis has weak anthocyanin on the upper side and the petiole has no anthocyanin colouration. The terminal leaflet is medium ovate in shape with an acuminate shaped tip and cordate shaped base. The terminal and lateral leaflets have an absent or very low frequency of coalescence. The lateral leaflets are medium in size and are narrowly ovate in shape with an acute to acuminate shaped tip and cordate shaped base. The leaf veins are shallow in depth. The terminal and lateral leaflets have weak waviness of the margin and have medium glossiness of the upper surface. The leaf blades have weak pubescence at the apical rosette. The presence of secondary leaflets is medium.

'Carrera' has a medium flowering profusion and a small inflorescence size. The flower buds are moderately persistent and have medium anthocyanin colouration. The corolla is red violet in colour with very weak anthocyanin on the inner surface. The corolla is medium in size and has a moderately prominent star. The peduncle has no anthocyanin colouration.

The tubers have yellow skin with yellow colour at the base of the eye. The skin develops strong anthocyanin colouration when exposed to light. The skin texture is smooth and the tubers are oval in shape. The tuber eyes are shallow in depth and are predominantly apical in distribution. The tuber eyebrows are not prominent. The tuber flesh is light yellow in colour with no secondary colour present.

'Carrera' has a large light sprout which is broad cylindrical in shape. The light sprout base has medium anthocyanin with a medium proportion of blue. The base has dense pubescence. The tip of the light sprout is smaller in size in relation to the base. The tip has a closed habit and has weak anthocyanin colouration. The tip has dense pubescence. There are a medium number of root tips and the lateral roots are short in length.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Carrera' originated from a cross between 'Allard' and 'Concurrent', made in Metslawier, The Netherlands in 1998. Selection criteria included yield, quality, disease resistance, pest resistance and agronomic characters.

Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Carrera' were conducted in North Tilley, New Brunswick in 2004. A randomized block design was used with four replicates per variety. All entries were planted in single-row plots and each entry had one replicate per block. Plots consisted of rows 5.5 meters long and between row spacing of 91 cm. Measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements. Colour determinations were made using the RHS colour chart.
