Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Fiscor'

Summary: 'Fismars' differs from the reference variety, 'Fiscor' in plant size, petiole length, and bract length and width. The plants of 'Fismars' are narrower than those of 'Fiscor'. The leaf petioles of 'Fismars' are shorter than those of 'Fiscor'. The bracts of 'Fismars' are shorter and wider than those of 'Fiscor'.

Description:

'Fismars' has weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the main stem and medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the upper branches. The leaves are broad ovate with a slight wedge to straight base with no anthocyanin colouration on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf blade. There is weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the veins on the upper surface of the leaf blade, along the lower half of the midrib only. On the veins of the lower surface of the leaf blade, the intensity of anthocyanin colouration is weak along the midrib and absent to very weak in the lower veins only. Lobe development is very weak with rounded sinuses between lobes. Intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the upper side of the petiole is strong and medium on the lower side.

The bracts of 'Fismars' are uniformly coloured with very weak intensity of rugosity between the veins. The bracts are broad-ovate with a wedge-shaped base and very weak lobe development with rounded sinuses between lobes. The glands of the cyathium are yellow and are medium in size.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Fismars' originated from the crossing 'Freedom' (female parent) with the hybrid seedling designated number 298 (male parent). The hybridization took place in Hillscheid, Germany in the summer of 1996. The seeds obtained were germinated in the spring of 1997 and flowering seedlings were selected in December, 1997. In the spring of 1998, cuttings from the original seedling were grafted on rootstocks of 'Maren' to induce branching ability. Branched plants grown from cuttings of the grafted plants were examined in trials conducted during the fall seasons of 1999 through to 2001.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Fismars' were conducted at Westcan Greenhouses Ltd., Langley, British Columbia in November/December of 2002. The trial consisted of a minimum of 15 plants of each variety grown in a greenhouse. The 15 cm pots were spaced approximately 40 cm (from center) apart. Unless otherwise indicated, measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
