Variety used for comparison: 'Fashionably Early Lavender Ice'

Summary: The plants of 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' are shorter than those of 'Fashionably Early Lavender Ice'. The pedicel and calyx of 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas those of 'Fashionably Early Lavender Ice' have absent or weak anthocyanin colouration. The flowers of 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' have a larger diameter than those of 'Fashionably Early Lavender Ice'. The corolla eye for 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' is medium sized and medium purple whereas that for 'Fashionably Early Lavender Ice' is small and dark blue pink. The corolla tube of 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' is medium violet whereas that of 'Fashionably Early Lavender Ice' is light violet.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' originated from a cross conducted by the breeder in Zeeland, Michigan, USA on November 17, 2013. The cross was made between the female parent variety 'Amethyst Pearl' and the male parent Phlox carolina variety 'Lil' Cahaba'. The new variety was selected in the spring of 2014 based on disease resistance, growth habit, foliage colour and flower characteristics. 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' was first asexually reproduced by stem cuttings in 2015.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Opening Act Pink-a-Dot' was conducted outdoors under a shade cloth during the summer of 2021 at Variety Rights Management, in Oxford Station, Ontario. There were 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. Plants were grown in 22 cm round pots. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
