Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Revolution Violet #3' (Surfinia Blue/Violet) and 'Jam Litbule' (Jamboree Light Blue)

Summary: 'Petspebl' has a longer petiole and a shorter sepal length than the reference varieties. 'Petspebl' has no anthocyanin in the sepals while 'Revolution Violet #3' has anthocyanin present. 'Petspebl' has a slightly smaller corolla diameter than the reference varieties. 'Petspebl' has violet flower colour with blue violet secondary colour while 'Revolution Violet #3' has dark violet flowers with no secondary colour and 'Jam Litbule' has violet flower colour with no secondary colour. 'Petspebl' has more conspicuous venation in the corolla tube than the reference varieties. 'Petspebl' has medium blue anthers while 'Revolution Violet #3' has cream coloured anthers and 'Jam Litbule' has grey green anthers.

Description:

'Petspebl' has an upright growth habit with medium plant height. The shoots are medium in thickness and short in length. The shoots have weak anthocyanin colouration. The leaves of 'Petspebl' are round in shape with a rounded apex. The leaves are not variegated and are medium green in colour on the upper side. Leaf blistering is present. The sepals are linear to spatulate in shape and have no anthocyanin.

'Petspebl' has single, funnel form flowers which are medium in diameter. The corolla has medium lobing. The corolla lobes are violet in colour with blue violet secondary colour radiating out from the center. The corolla lobe has purple veins which are medium in conspicuousness. The corolla lobe has weak to medium undulation of the margin. The inner side of the corolla tube is white in colour with strong, dark violet venation. The anthers are medium blue in colour before anther dehiscence.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Petspebl' originated from a controlled cross between two unnamed parents, conducted by the breeder in June 1999 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. A single plant was selected in May 2000 based on time of flowering, plant habit and vigour. Asexual reproduction of 'Petspebl' by vegetative cuttings was first conducted in August 2000.

Tests & Trials: 'Petspebl' was tested in a polyhouse during the spring/summer of 2005, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings planted into 15 cm pots on March 12, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001. Measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
