Summary: 'Balsuncora' is a tall petunia variety with an upright growth habit, whereas the plants of 'Whip Sal' are shorter with a semi-upright to creeping habit. The flowers of 'Balsuncora' are larger in diameter than those of 'Whip Sal'. The flowers of 'Balsuncora' have more conspicuous veining on the corolla lobes than 'Whip Sal'. 'Balsuncora' has light yellow colour in the corolla tube, while the tube of 'Whip Sal' is white.

Description:

'Balsuncora' is a petunia variety which has tall plants with an upright growth habit. The shoots are thin and have very weak or no anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Balsuncora' is medium green and ovate to elliptic in shape, with no variegation or blistering. The leaf apex is narrow acute. The sepals are linear and have no anthocyanin colouration.

'Balsuncora' has single, pink red flowers which are funnel form in shape. The lobing of the corolla is moderate to strong. The upper side of the corolla has one colour, with moderately conspicuous, yellow veins. The margins of the corolla lobes are weakly to moderately undulating. The corolla tube is greenish white and light yellow with moderately conspicuous veins. Before pollen dehiscence the anthers are yellowish white.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Balsuncora' originated in a controlled breeding program during November 2001 at Embrun, Illinois. The female parent was the proprietary petunia selection designated 4300-1-1, characterized by its small, salmon coloured flowers. The male parent was the proprietary selection designated 4117-2-1-1. The initial selection was made in April 2002. Asexual propagation since that time has been through the use of vegetative cuttings.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Balsuncora' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, planted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 13, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
