Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Balrufpink' and 'Condopinkveined'

Summary: 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' produces a wider plant than the reference varieties. The shoot length is longer in 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' than in the reference varieties. 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' has no anthocyanin colouration in the shoots or sepals while 'Condopinkveined' does. The shape of the leaf blade is round to elliptic with a broad obtuse shaped apex in 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' while it is ovate with a narrow acute shaped apex in 'Balrufpink'. 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' has no blistering of the leaf blade while 'Condopinveined' does. The petiole length is longer in 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' than in the reference varieties. 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' has shorter sepals than 'Balrufpink'. The flower colour of 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' is a light pink, while 'Balrufpink' has a dark pink colour, and 'Condopinkveined' is a light blue violet colour. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla tube is medium to strong for 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' while it is very weak to weak for 'Balrufpink'.

Description:

'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' is a double petunia variety which has semi erect to semi drooping growth habit, and medium plant height. The shoots are medium to thick in thickness with no anthocyanin colouration. The shape of the leaf is round to elliptic with a broad obtuse shaped apex. The upper side of the leaf blade is light to medium green in colour with no variegation. There is a petiole present.

The sepals of 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' are linear in shape with no anthocyanin colouration . The overall flower shape is funnelform. The pedicel is short in length and thin to medium in width. The margin of the corolla has medium to strong undulation. 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' produces blue pink flowers. The prominence of the veins on the inner side of the corolla lobe and corolla tube is medium to strong. The corolla tube length is very short for 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' and white to light yellow colour on the inner side. The anthers are cream coloured.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' is the product of a controlled breeding program in Tochigi, Japan during 1999. The female parent was an unnamed internal breeding seed line of Petunia hybrida, while the male parent was petunia 'Sonata Pure White'. Initial selection was made in 2000.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kirimaji Double Pink Vein' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the fall of 2002. The trials included 15 plants of each variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 10 cm pots on August 16, 2002. All colour measurements were made using RHS colour chart 2001. Unless otherwise indicated measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
