'Revolution Violet No. 3' produces single, funnelform, dark violet coloured flowers along the axis and at the tip of the stems. The apex of each petal (corolla lobe) is cuspidate. There is moderate pubescence on the peduncle. The flowers have a mottled or variegated appearance with a dark violet ground colour and a lighter violet colour in blotches over the surface of the corolla. The throat of the flowers is violet.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Revolution Violet No. 3' originated from crossing 'Falcon Blue' as the female parent to a wild type of petunia native to Brazil, as the pollen parent. The cross took place at the Research Centre of Suntory Ltd., Osaka, Japan, in June 1991. From the crossing two seedlings were selected for vivid purple colour and decumbent growth habit. These two seedlings were crossed in March 1992. Five seedlings were selected from this cross and were grown in a flower potting and bedding trial. In March 1993, one plant was finally selected and determined to be distinguishable from all other varieties. It was named 'Revolution Violet No. 3'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Revolution Violet No. 3' were conducted in a greenhouse at Norseco Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec during the summer of 2000. The trials consisted of nine plants of each variety, grown in 25 cm hanging pots (3 plants per pot). Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements.
