Description:

'Klecona' is a zonal pelargonium variety. 'Klecona' has an intermediate growth habit and green stems. The stems are thin to medium and have medium pubescence. The leaf blade is a type one shape with an open to closed base and crenate margins. There is weak lobing present which is shallow in depth. The leaf blade margin is moderately wavy and the leaf blade has medium pubescence on the upper side. The leaves are medium green in colour with no variegation. The leaf zone is weak to moderately conspicuous on young leaves and very weak on older leaves. The leaf zone is reddish-brown in colour and located in the normal position. 'Klecona' has dense pubescence on the petiole.

'Klecona' produces a low to moderate number of reddish-purple inflorescences. Peduncles have dense pubescence and weak anthocyanin colouration. The flower bud is round in shape and the florets are semi-double. The petal margin is entire. There is a small white zone at the base of the upper petals. There are no petal markings. The pedicel has medium pubescence and the colour in the middle third is medium red. The sepals have dense pubescence and are green and red in colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Klecona' originated from the controlled cross between 'Klevette' x ZJ 099 which was made in Stuttgart, Germany in 1992. Seedlings were selected in June 1993, based on the criteria for double flowers, flower colour, upright compact growth habit and early flowering.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Klecona' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring/summer of 2001 in Frankton, Ontario. The trials included a total of 10 plants per variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 11 cm pots. All measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
