Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'CDC Rocket'

Summary: The density of flecking of the stipule is very sparse for 'CDC Blazer' whereas the density of flecking is medium for 'CDC Rocket'. The apex of the upper sepal of the flower is accuminate for 'CDC Blazer' whereas the apex of the upper sepal of the flower of 'CDC Rocket' is acute. The pod of 'CDC Blazer' is smaller than the pod of 'CDC Rocket'. When the plants are fully mature and the seed is green and fully developed, the stem of 'CDC Blazer' is longer than the stem of 'CDC Rocket'. The colour of the testa is brownish green for 'CDC Blazer' whereas the testa is reddish brown for 'CDC Rocket'. The seed weight for 'CDC Blazer' is less than the seed weight for 'CDC Rocket'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Blazer' (experimental designation 3012-1LT) resulted from a breeding program based at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It originated from the cross 'CDC Meadow' / '1819-2' made in 2005. From the F2 population of this cross, 'CDC Blazer' was selected for its yield, days to seed maturity, days to flowering, vine length, resistance to lodging, seed weight, seed coat colour, and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'CDC Blazer' were conducted during 2015 and 2016 at the Sutherland Research Farm of the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replication consisting of 3 rows per variety. The rows were 3.66 metres long and the spacing between rows was 0.30 metres. The plot size was 3.35 square metres with a planting density of 65 plants per square metre. Unless otherwise indicted, the measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of plants for each year of trial.
