Summary: The growing tip of the young shoot of 'Josengwhangkeum' has strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and medium intensity of pubescence whereas 'Ar-Ri-Rang' has weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and very weak pubescence. The leaves of 'Josengwhangkeum' are longer and wider than those of 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The shape of the base of the leaf blade of 'Josengwhangkeum' is cordate whereas that of 'Ar-Ri-Rang' is acute. The incisions of the leaf margins of 'Josengwhangkeum' are medium in depth whereas they are very shallow for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The arrangement of the flower petals of 'Josengwhangkeum' is touching whereas it is overlapping for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The shape of the flower petals of 'Josengwhangkeum' is circular whereas it is ovate for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The eye basin of the fruit of 'Josengwhangkeum' is deep whereas it is very shallow for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'.

LEAF: downwards attitude in relation to shoot, large length/width ratio, cordate base, acute apex, medium to long pointed tip, sharply serrate margin, medium depth incisions, medium to strong curvature of longitudinal axis
STIPULES: absent

FLOWER: mainly on spurs, stigma located at same level to above stamens
SEPALS: spreading in relation to corolla
PETALS: touching, medium to large, circular, rounded base, short claw

IMMATURE FRUIT: green sepals in early summer

SKIN: yellow green ground colour, large amount of yellow over colour, very small area of russet located around eye basin, absent or very small area of russet on cheeks and around stalk attachment
STALK: medium thickness, absent or very weak curvature, straight in relation to axis of the fruit, shallow stalk cavity
EYE BASIN, AT HARVEST: sepals fall off during growing season, deep, broad, slightly ribbed relief around eye
FLESH: medium texture, medium to firm, juicy to very juicy

Origin & Breeding History: 'Josengwhangkeum' arose from the cross of 'Niitaka' and 'Shinko' made in the spring of 1986 at the National Horticulture Research Institute, Rural Development Adminstration, Suwon, Republic of Korea. It was planted in the field in the spring of 1986 and first selected for its fruit quality and attractive skin colour. From 1994 to 1998, it was tested at 9 sites in regional adaptability tests. The final selection of 'Josengwhangkeum' was completed in 1998 and it was asexaully propagated by grafting onto seedling rootstocks of Pyrus pyrifolia.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre, Summerland, British Columbia during the 2013 to 2016 growing seasons. Plots consisted of a minimum of 10 trees of each variety with a spacing of 1 meter between trees within the row and 3.5 meters between the rows of trees. The trees were grafted on 'Old Home' rootstock and were originally established during the 2011 growing season. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements per variety.
