Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Brightside' and 'Balserwhit' (Serenity White)

Summary: 'Osjamwhit' is an osteospermum variety which flowers earlier than 'Brightside' and slightly later than 'Balserwhit'. The inflorescences of 'Osjamwhit' are smaller in diameter than those of the two reference varieties and the ray florets are shorter. The varieties differ in colour of newly opened flowers and also in the colour of the lower side of the ray florets. 'Osjamwhit' has a purple disc, whereas 'Brightside' has a light blue disc and 'Balserwhit' has a dark blue disc.

Description:

'Osjamwhit' is an osteospermum variety which has erect shoots and dark green leaves with no variegation and very weak lobing. The inflorescences have one or two complete whorls of ray florets and incomplete ray florets whorls are also present. The ray florets are oblanceolate and white on the upper side, with a red-purple zone at the base. The lower side of the ray floret is purple with red-brown longitudinal stripes. The disc is purple.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Osjamwhit' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder in June 1999. The female parent was identified as 'C298' and the male parent was 'C272'. A single plant was selected by the breeder in April 2000 based on the following criteria: early flowering, branching characteristics, plant habit and vigour.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Osjamwhit' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included 15 plants of each of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 15 cm pots on March 21, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 19, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
