Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Morgan' and 'CDC Dancer'

Summary: At the 5 to 9 tiller stage, the leaf blade pubescence of 'ORe3541M' is very sparse whereas that of 'CDC Dancer' is of medium density. At booting, the pubescence on the margin of the leaf of 'ORe3541M' is absent or very sparse whereas it is of medium density for both reference varieties. 'ORe3541M' is earlier heading than 'CDC Dancer'. There are no hairs or spines on the lowest panicle node of 'ORe3541M' whereas there are a few hairs or spines for both reference varieties. The lemma of 'ORe3541M' has a weak tendency to be awned whereas the tendency is absent to very weak for both reference varieties. The spikelet attitude of 'ORe3541M' is semi-nodding whereas it is nodding for 'AC Morgan'.

PLANT: spring hulled type, erect juvenile growth habit, very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheath and blade

STEM: no pubescence above and below the upper culm node

LEAF: medium green, absent or very sparse pubescence of margin, absent or very weak glaucosity

PANICLE: equilateral/symmetrical orientation, medium density, semi-erect attitude of branches, 30 to 45 degree angle between dominant side branch and rachis, no short hairs or spines on lowest node
SPIKELET: sucker to semi-abscission separation, semi-nodding, 2 grains
RACHILLA: glabrous
LEMMA: small extent of lateral overlap on palea, white to yellow at maturity, medium density of pubescence on lateral and dorsal surface, absent or very weak tendency to be awned

KERNEL: basal hairs absent, yellow
GROAT: dense pubescence
SCUTELLUM: pointed, medium size

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to lodging, good resistance to shattering
DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Black loose smut (Ustilago avenae) races A13, A60 and A617 and Crown rust (Puccinia coronata) races CR13, CR223, CR241, CR249, CR254, CR258 and CR259; moderately susceptible to Barley yellow dwarf virus; susceptible to Crown rust (Puccinia coronata) race BRBG-94 (CR257) and Stem rust (Puccinia graminis) races TGB, TGL and TJJ

Origin & Breeding History: 'ORe3541M' (experimental designation 309CM109 and OT6008) arose from the cross 'Leggett' (female parent) by 'CDC Minstrel' (male parent) conducted at the Oat Advantage research farm near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the fall of 2009. The F1 was grown from January to April 2010 with the F2 grown in bulk in a population plot during the 2010 growing season. Field selection in the F2 was based on plant type, disease resistance and grain quality. The F3 was increased in the growth cabinet in the fall of 2010 as was the F4 in the winter into 2011. The F5 seed was sown at the Saskatoon site and further selected for plant type, agronomic qualities, disease resistance, yield and visual grain quality. Seed from a subset of F5 derived F6 selected plants were sent to New Zealand in the fall of 2011 for increase. In 2012, the top performing lines were tested in yield trials in western Canada. One line, OT6008, arose out of this testing and was entered into the Western Cooperative Oat Registration Trial in 2013 and 2014.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'ORe3541M' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the research plots of Oat Advantage near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A three replicate design was planted using plots measuring approximately 3 metres by 1 metre with 6 rows per plot spaced 20 cm between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Disease ratings were provided through the Western Cooperative Oat Registration Trials, Disease Evaluation Team Report 2013 to 2014.
