Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Munstead' and 'Schola'

Summary: The plants of 'SAKO1638' have a globular growth habit whereas those of 'Schola' are bushy. The intensity of grey tinge on the foliage of 'SAKO1638' is strong whereas that of 'Schola' is weak to medium. Including the first whorl, the total length of the spike of 'SAKO1638' is very short to short whereas that of 'Munstead' is a medium length.

Description:

PLANT: globular growth habit, large, semi-erect attitude of outer flowering stems at full flowering, dense at full flowering

FOLIAGE: medium intensity of green colour, strong intensity of grey tinge
LEAF: short to medium length, medium to broad, no incisions of margin

TIME OF BEGINNIG OF FLOWERING: early to mid season
FLOWERING STEM: short, thin at middle third, medium to dark green, medium rigidity of basal part, no lateral branching
SPIKE: medium maximal width, very short to short total length (including first whorl), very few whorls (excluding first whorl), very short from second whorl, short distance between whorls, cylindrical shape, very few flowers, few flowers in apical whorl, narrow fertile bracts, bracteoles always present, very short to short bracteoles, no infertile bracts
CALYX: greenish, medium to strong pubescence
COROLLA: Near medium blue violet (RHS N87C)

Origin & Breeding History: 'SAKO1638' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Lammert Koning, in Boskoop, The Netherlands in June to July of 2015. The cross was made between the variety 'Felice' as the female parent and an unknown L. angustifolia variety as the male parent. A single plant was selected in July 2016 based on its plant habit, overall plant strength, flower colour and young leaf colour. The lavender variety 'SAKO1638' was first propagated by vegetative cuttings in August 2016, in Boskoop, The Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'SAKO1638' is based on the UPOV Report of Technical Examination, application number 2019/1619, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Groupe d'Étude et de contrôle des Variétés et des Semences in Cavaillon, France in 2020 and 2021. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
