Origin & Breeding History: 'SAKIMP031' originated from a discovery made by the breeders, Chihiro Sato and Shinji Minemura, employees of Sakata Seed Corporation in Misato, Japan. The hybridization was made between the female parental line 'NE-4391' and the male parental line 'NF-4858' in September 2009. The resulting F1 progeny was evaluated in a field trial conducted in Misato, Japan. A single plant was selected based on its flower colour, root system and spreading plant growth habit. The selection was vegetatively propagated and evaluated in another field trial in Misato, Japan from May to August 2011. Vegetative cuttings of this selection were shipped to Salinas, California, United States for final evaluation after which it was named 'SAKIMP031'.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SAKIMP031' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on June 8, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on August 13, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
