Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Mara Seedless'

Summary: The lobes of the petiole sinus on the mature leaf of 'ARRATWENTYNINE' have a wide open arrangement whereas those of 'Mara Seedless' have a half open arrangement. The berry of 'ARRATWENTYNINE' is medium sized with a medium thick skin whereas the berry of 'Mara Seedless' is large with thick skin.

Description:

YOUNG SHOOT TIP: wide open tip, absent or very sparse prostrate hairs, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of prostrate hairs, absent or very sparse erect hairs
SHOOT: semi-erect attitude (before tying), dorsal side of internodes and nodes are green and red, ventral side of internodes and nodes are green, absent or very sparse erect hairs on internodes
WOODY SHOOTS: yellowish brown, very early season bud burst
TENDRILS: long

YOUNG LEAF BLADE: upper side light copper red, absent or very sparse prostrate hairs between main veins on lower side, absent or very sparse erect hairs on main veins on lower side
MATURE LEAF BLADE: medium sized, wedge-shaped, absent or very weak degree of blistering on upper side, five lobes, medium depth of upper lateral sinuses, slightly overlapping arrangement of lobes of upper lateral sinuses, wide open arrangement of lobes of petiole sinus, low proportion of main veins on upper side with anthocyanin colouration, length of petiole is moderately longer than length of middle vein
MATURE LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): absent or very sparse prostrate hairs between main veins, absent or very sparse erect hairs on main veins
TEETH OF LEAF MARGIN: medium length, medium length to width ratio, both sides convex

FLOWER: fully developed stamens and fully developed gynoecium

BERRY BUNCH: large, medium density, medium length peduncle of primary bunch
BERRY: begins ripening very early, medium size, obtuse ovoid shape, moderately easy detachment from pedicel, no particular flavour, rudimentary seed formation

Origin & Breeding History: 'ARRATWENTYNINE' originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2006 between 'A.3.' and 'GAW5' as part of a grape breeding program located near Bakersfield in San Joaquin Valley, California, USA. The initial seedling of 'ARRATWENTYNINE' was selected in June 2008 based on fruit size, fruit firmness, seedless berries, skin colouration, cluster size and flavour. Additional selection criteria included time of fruit ripening, as well as amenability for storage, handling and shipping.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'ARRATWENTYNINE' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2013/3291, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted at the Centro di ricerca Viticoltura ed Enologia in Conegliano, Italy from 2014 to 2017.
