Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Bethune' and 'CDC Sorrel'

Summary: At flowering, the natural plant height of 'CDC Plava' is shorter than that of 'CDC Sorrel'. The distal end of the filament of 'CDC Plava' is white whereas it is blue for 'CDC Bethune'. The distal end of the style of 'CDC Plava' is light blue whereas that of 'CDC Bethune' is blue. 'CDC Plava' has ciliation of the false septa of the boll whereas 'CDC Bethune' has none. From the cotyledon scar to the first branch, the stems of 'CDC Plava' are shorter than those of 'CDC Sorrel'. From the cotyledon scar to the top boll, the stems of 'CDC Plava' are shorter than those of 'CDC Sorrel'. The 1000 seed weight of 'CDC Plava' is lower than that of 'CDC Sorrel'.

Description:

PLANT: low capability to produce basal branching, matures mid-season
HYPOCOTYL: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration

FLOWER: very weak sepal dotting at bud stage, blue violet crown just before opening, flattened disk shape, medium sized corolla, blue when fully developed, no longitudinal folding of the petals, overlapping arrangement
STAMEN: white filament, blue anthers
STYLE: light blue at distal end, blue at basal end
STIGMA: violet

BOLL: medium size, ciliation of the false septa present, semi-dehiscent
SEED: medium brown, medium size

AGRONOMY: good resistance to shattering, lodging and capsule loss

USE: oilseed type

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Plava' (experimental designations FP2385, F09175) was developed at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan using a pedigree breeding method. The cross between 'FP2114' and 'FP2142' was conducted in 2003 in the phytotron at the University of Saskatchewan. The F2 population was grown at the Kernen Crop Research Farm in 2005 and advanced using the pedigree system from the F3 through F5. Selection at each generation was primarily for vigour of stand, maturity, oil content and iodine value. From 2009 through 2011, the line was evaluated as F09175 in replicated yield trials in Saskatchewan. In 2012 and 2013, it was entered and tested in the Northern Linseed Flax Cooperative Test as FP2385.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted in 2014 and 2015 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Trials consisted of 3 replications of each variety in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). There were 6 rows per replicate with a row length of 3.66 metres with 19 cm between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety each year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
