Variety used for comparison: 'Gallery Singer'

Summary: 'Melody Bolero' is a dahlia variety which has larger leaves than the reference variety 'Gallery Singer'. The flower heads are smaller than those of 'Gallery Singer' and are ball-type doubles with a high density of ray florets, whereas 'Gallery Singer' has decorative-type double flowers with medium density of ray florets. The two varieties differ in main colour of the upper and lower sides of the ray florets. 'Melody Bolero' flowers are orange red whereas 'Gallery Singer' has medium red flowers.

Description:

'Melody Bolero' is a dahlia variety which has an upright, compact growth habit. The stems are light green with strong to very strong anthocyanin colouration. The leaves are mostly compound with up to 5 leaflets which are dark green in colour with many medium to deep incisions on the margins. The texture of the upper surface of the leaves is weakly rugose and the veins on the upper surface are flat to raised.

The peduncle of 'Melody Bolero' has very strong anthocyanin colouration. The flowers are located moderately above the foliage and the flower heads are at a moderately acute angle to the peduncle. The flowers are double, ball-type and orange red. The ray florets are densely arranged and straight along the longitudinal axis. In cross section at the mid-point the ray florets of 'Melody Bolero' are weakly concave (U-shaped). The lateral margin of the ray floret is slightly involute and the tip is rounded with a dentate tip.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Melody Bolero' originated from a hybridization made in a controlled breeding program during 1996 at Lisse, The Netherlands. The female parent was 'Gallery Singer' and the male parent was an unknown Dahlia cultivar. The initial selection was made in September 1997. Asexual propagation since that time has been through the use of vegetative cuttings.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Melody Bolero' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring/summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 28, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on June 14, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
